The Southern Carmine Bee Eater lives in Equatorial Africa during the breeding season, August to November, and migrates to South Africa from March to August. Bees and other flying insects are their main diet. Their feathers are a bright carmine red colour with a bright turquoise-blue crown and under feathers, which distinguish them from other species. Carmine Bee Eaters are very social and gather in large flocks. They can often be seen in groups in trees and nest at the end of a one to two meter long burrow, in vertical river banks.
