This female cheetah is intently looking at something in the distance that could pose a threat to her cub, possibly a lion or hyena which would kill the cub if given the chance. Cheetahs are now on the endangered species list, numbering around 10,000 in the wild. In addition to a high mortality rate for cheetah cubs due to large predators, they also face many other threats. Probably the biggest is loss of habitat due to the expansion of human settlements which also contributes to a decline in prey. Cheetahs are also shot by farmers and ranchers in order to protect their livestock, killed for their fur and captured for zoos and private collectors. Cheetahs once lived throughout much of Africa and large parts of Asia. Today they are nearly extinct in Asia, and their range in Africa has been drastically reduced.
