River Horse
Dominant male hippopotamuses establish territories in rivers and lakes which they defend for mating rights. The yawn of a hippo is a territorial display, warning other males to keep away. They have massive canine teeth, which can grow up to 20 inches. The yawn reveals these formidable teeth, signaling their strength and ferocity. The jaw hinge allows the hippo to open its mouth to nearly 180°. Other than mosquitos, which spread malaria and other deadly diseases, hippos are Africa’s most dangerous species, responsible for more human deaths than any other wild animal. The name hippopotamus comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse".
