Confrontation
Dominant male hippopotamuses engage in fierce battles with rival males to establish territories in rivers and lakes for mating rights with the females that live in the area. These fights can be extremely violent with open-mouthed head-clashing and shoving, biting and slashing. The battles can cause crippling injuries and even death. They have massive canine teeth, which can grow up to 20 inches and the jaw hinge allows the hippo to open its mouth to nearly 180°.
