If you have ever tried to put a house cat somewhere it did not want to be you have experienced the amazing strength and agility of a tiny cousin of the Mountain Lion. Weighing in at as much as 200 lbs, the Mountain Lion, or Cougar, is an incredibly effective hunter. In our southern Alberta home we have come upon kills of full grown elk, moose and deer. Using every possible advantage including leaping down onto the back of its prey, the cougar digs in with its claws and teeth, pulling them to the ground, biting the neck to suffocate the prey or severing the spine. A hungry cougar will attempt to take down a well armed bull elk if he feels he has the advantage. Often the cat is injured in the high stakes game of survival. A wounded predator is vulnerable to starvation, needing all of its health and strength to thrive in the harsh world in which they live.
