It;s Safe.... the Sea Lion Left
Watching King Penguins decide to swim or not to swim is fascinating. The crowd will shuffle to the edge, then reverse and up the sandy dunes, they proceed, and repeat the process over and over again. With a Sea Lion, often offshore, this is probably a good strategy. The Magellanic penguin is often seen coming and going by itself. Its ability to move quickly when exiting the water helps it survival. Its short flippers are used like an extra pair of feet. The kings do not seem to have this same dexterity and prefer the safety of a large group.
