Biography

While growing up in the scenic Crowsnest Pass region of Southwestern Alberta, surrounded by Canadian Rocky Mountains, Caroline Brooks was influenced by her father, John Wavrecan, to appreciate the detail and perfection in nature.

After completing high school, she obtained a Journalism Diploma from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, and subsequently, had a lengthy finance career in the petroleum industry. She dabbled briefly with a paintbrush in the late 1990's, but it was after partaking in her first art workshop with wildlife artist Terry Isaac in August 2005 that her painting passion was ignited.

Caroline has since attended art workshops led by world-renowned wildlife artists John and Suzie Seerey-Lester, Daniel Smith, Terry Isaac, and John Banovich, and most recently, a Robert Bateman seminar. She also receives ongoing instruction from internationally-acclaimed local wildlife artist David Kitler.

Her Snow Leopard painting entitled "Targeted Approach", has been selected as the cover image for Artists For Conservation's 2018 Annual Calendar.

When she's not painting or taking photographs to use as reference material, Caroline enjoys travelling with her husband Larry, hand-feeding red-breasted nuthatches and black-capped chickadees in their back yard, birding, and tending their summer vegetable and plant gardens. "We truly appreciate yet another of nature's wonderful gifts--live food, freshly picked".

Caroline receives inspiration for her paintings through field observation and photo reference outings. Just being surrounded by nature provides a sense of peace and being grounded, where she feels most comfortable and alive. "Feeling a connection to the original experience, the initial encounter of that unique moment in time, and inviting the viewer to share it with me through my paintings" is what she most hopes to capture in her paintings.
