African Painted Dogs, also known as African Wild Dogs, are one of Africa's most endangered species. There are estimated to be only 3,000-5,000 remaining. I spent several weeks in the bush in Zimbabwe with Dr. Greg Rasmussen, founder of Painted Dog Research, tracking them. We encountered several packs and identified each individual by its unique coat pattern. Pack members have very strong social bonds and often rest or sleep close together.
