The United Nations designated June 8 as World Oceans Day - a day for humanity to celebrate the ocean, to raise global awareness of the benefits we receive from the ocean and our duty to use ocean resources sustainably. The Day was first declared 1992 in Rio de Janeiro in conjunction with the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).
