World Lion Day

World Lion Day was declared in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, to celebrate and raise awareness of the conservation as well as sustainable solutions to protect and save global wild lion populations from extinction.

African Lions face multiple threats including habitat loss, trophy hunting, human-wildlife conflict, particularly in areas of human population growth. Lions are the second-largest cat in the world, weighing up to 550 pounds.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, lions are a “vulnerable”. Researchers estimate that there are between 30,000 and 100,000 lions left on planet Earth. Lions originally roamed all over Africa, North America and the Eurasian supercontinent, but their range is now reduced primarily to Africa and isolated parts of Asia.

African Lioness - Colored Pencil by Linda Martin. Linda will donate N/A (artwork not for sale) to from the sale of this work.

"Misty", the four year old lioness, was born in South Africa in 2016. She travelled to Australia as a cub, along with an unrelated male cub named "Milo". After a 30 day quarantine period they arrived at Billabong Zoo and Wildlife Park in New South Wales. Here, they have become popular ambassadors for their species and, importantly, have already produced four offspring....

Cecil and Jericho - Watercolor by Linda DuPuis-Rosen. Linda will donate 25% to from the sale of this work.

This is a painting of Cecil and his coalition partner Jericho. Both of these lions lived amazing lives and sired many cubs. A brief history: Cecil and his brother Leander wanted to take over territory ruled by Mpufo, who was Jerico's dad. Cecil and Leander went into a monumental battle with Mpufo, resulting in Mpufo killing Leander and seriously wounding Cecil. Mpufo was also seriously...

Dawn Patrol - Oil by Jerry Ragg. Jerry will donate 20% to Artists for Conservation (AFC) from the sale of this work.

I had the idea of painting three male brother lions a long time ago. After some research, I knew I had to have these brothers with the sun rising along Victoria Falls as they tour the edge on a morning stroll. I like to capture a moment in time in my paintings. The mood and feeling of my paintings is as important as the subjects I paint.

Golden Gaze - Scratchboard by Cynthie Fisher. Cynthie will donate 50% to African Wildlife Foundation from the sale of this work.

I’ve amassed an enormous pile of reference on lions after many trips to Africa. They never fail to amaze, impress, and inspire me, and I never tire of depicting them in as many mediums as I can. I remember this male lion, laying under a thorn bush, idly keeping an eye on two of his lionesses and their cubs. I liked the confident, almost sultry look in his eyes. He had nothing to fear with all the...

Relentless Fighter - Acrylic by Cindy Weitzel. Cindy will donate 25% to African Wildlife Foundation from the sale of this work.

Being a Wildlife Artist, I have become aware of how the animals around the world need our help with conservation. From Painting the soul in their eyes, to the textures of the fur I painted "Relentless Fighter" to signify, strength and perseverance, which everything on earth are trying to cope. Painting the soul in his eyes, to the textures of his fur the strength he signifies, the...
