International Zebra Day was established to create greater awareness of these iconically monochromatic equines. There are three species of Zebra in the world today, all of which tend to live in semi-arid habitats across Africa. The Grevy Zebra is the largest species, is currently endangered and lives in Kenya and Ethiopia. The Plains Zebra (aka common zebra) ranges across much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. The Mountain Zebra lives in the grasslands of South Africa, Namibia and Angola, distinguished by a loose flap of skin (or dewlap) under their neck. Today, the Grevy Zebra is endangered.
