World WhaleDay was founded in 1980 and first celebrated in Maui, HI. Iconic symbols of the Environmental Movement that started in the 1960s, whales and their plight for survival in the face of human expansion, remind us of our impact on the entire planet and the beauty that is under threat. Humans hunted whales of all kinds for meat and oil and brought several species to the brink. Today their biggest threat is polution, changing ocean temperatures and loss of habitat and food sources. The largest creature to ever live, is the Blue Whale, yet it feeds on krill, a type of crustacean that is among the smallest of ocean creatures.
