Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970 to show popular support for protecting the environment. It has since grown over the last five decades to include a host of globally coordinated events including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2022 is "Invest In Our Planet". On Earth Day's 50th anniversary (in 2020), over 100 million people around the world observed the event in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilization in history.
