Hugh's Home (2016)

This was a commissioned painting, showing a portion of a large unique home in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada. Wanting to preserve a special piece of history, a contractor named Hugh used reclaimed materials from a century-old convent that they were tearing down, to build his own home. I prepared sketches then took photos in the early morning sun. I loved the stonework, the old gothic beams and especially the humorous gargoyles. Taking artistic license, I added a couple more of them from other areas of the house to enhance this front entrance piece. The collector loves birds, and gave me the choice of a few different species commonly seen from their windows. I chose the Red-bellied Woodpecker flying into the rafters displaying its plumage, complementing the colour palette of the work.
