Backyard Encounters - Squirrel (2015)

$3950 USD
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, 'If the stars should appear but one night every thousand years how man would marvel and adore.' It made me wonder about other things we might take for granted? Countless numbers of paintings have been offered placing tigers and pandas in the spotlight, but what about the supporting cast members? Among the more common candidates that we may chance upon year round, I chose to focus on the squirrel. If anyone were to ask me which of my paintings gave me the most joy to produce, this would be one of them. Rather than merely 'cloning' a photograph, it was my desire to offer something different. Experimenting with a number of techniques like unconventional graphic breaks, leaving some areas untouched or as grey tones - by spraying graphite or blending it into colour - it was my intention to give this otherwise forgettable squirrel its chance to shine.
