Targeted Approach (2017)

$4700 USD
Listed as an endangered species, the magnificent Snow Leopard population has been in decline as a result of poaching, and from loss of habitat and prey. In addition, climate change has forced these elusive, solitary creatures to hunt at lower elevations, where they are the scourge of livestock herders. Since 2006, the Wildlife Conservation Society has been working in the Wakhan area of Afghanistan, introducing measures to mitigate illegal hunting of snow leopards. More strict governance, construction of predator-proof livestock corrals, and the introduction of livestock predation insurance have had a positive impact on snow leopard numbers. Snow leopards are now protected under Afghan law. Actions such as this are proof that conservation efforts truly make a difference. The protection of this vulnerable species is vital to their long-term survival.
