King of Africa (2016)

Bleached bones lie all over the African Bush. I am fascinated by their sculptural shape, and wanted to create a composition including the traditional idea of a skull as a ‘memento mori', reflecting the threat faced by so many African animals, not just as individuals but as species on the verge of extinction. The fight for the survival of lions in the wild has never been more urgent. Fifty years ago 100,000 wild lions roamed free in Africa. Experts believe their numbers have now plummeted to fewer than 20,000 across the continent.
