Fast Food - American Kestrel (2016)

$900 USD
The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. Falcons are known for speed and their ability to change direction quickly in flight. The kestrel is distinguished by the ability to hover, flapping incessantly for long periods into the wind over an open field or meadow. With the ability to see ultraviolet light, the kestrel utilizes the bright paths of urine trails put down by small mammals that aid and direct them to their prey. Locked on target they plunge from the sky to capture prey on the ground and then carry it off to a perch to consume. The male American Kestrel is portrayed here with his prize. This species is not yet threatened but long-term declines in North American populations have been noted.
