Mossy Forest (2016)

$2800 USD
I've always enjoyed the forests of the west coast, with moss hanging down from the large trees and a mist that separates them in the distance. The first time I hiked through these forests there was an immediate sense of scale that I hadn't felt before, with trees so large they reached up above the canopy, and a vibrant green unlike anything I had seen. It was an overwhelming sensory experience that was rich in biodiversity and mystery. It seemed fitting to have the owl in this painting since they seem to have an air of mystery themselves, that at any moment it could simply disappear into the trees and be gone. And in this piece, I wanted to feel like that was a real possibility. The owl has seen something and will soon leave its perch and fly into the misty layers of trees going back into the forest. It's the depth that was the most important to me in the painting. The foggy and cloudy forests of the west coast seem to have that ethereal effect and I wanted the bold branches and owl to just pop, as though they might come right out of the painting.
