Eastern Box Turtle (2016)

I chose the Eastern Box Turtle as it is an endangered species in the State of New Jersey, although it ranges throughout the eastern United States. Their population in New Jersey is declining with habitat loss so to have them living on my property is quite the privilege. This original watercolor painting is part of a collection of artworks I have created with Conserve Wildlife on endangered and threatened species of New Jersey. The Eastern Box Turtle is such an incredible animal to paint with its unique shell and bright colors. The prehistoric look to turtles in general fascinates me and to show that detail and color in them is quite a challenge.
