Arthur (2016)

I was awestruck as I watched this adult male mandrill in the rainforest of the Republic of Congo. His furry head crest, full mane, blue ridges surrounding a red nose and lips, and golden beard made him appear unworldly. Mandrills are the largest of all monkeys. Living in the rainforests of equatorial Africa, they are shy and reclusive and much remains unknown about these colorful primates. Hunted as bush meat and threatened by a shrinking rainforest their future survival is in question. I created this portrait of Arthur as part of a Congo series to raise awareness about the plight of this spectacular species.
