Piece Keepers (2016)

'Our children are our future' were words from a conversation I had with the teacher in Llano Bonito – the Embera village where I was a guest, while studying the Harpy Eagle in the Darien region of Panama. I recorded them in my journal during AFC's first Flag Expedition, along with a question from my guide, who wondered if I knew what the children in the next village were doing in their spare time. It turns out that they were 'killing birds with sling shots'! With the image of this Embera girl, Midalia, I hope to make the visual connection between her and the responsibility her generation has to the environment with which they have been entrusted. Although this painting depicts wildlife from Panama's rainforest, from floor to canopy, the concept applies anywhere in the world. We are all pieces of the larger picture, connected to and responsible for each other. Our actions have far-reaching consequences – positive or negative.
