Earlier in 2013, AFCsuccessfully launched a pilot expedition to the Cayman Islands under the new AFC Marine Explorers program with a team of 7 artists and 2 filmmakers. The goal of the program is to put groups of artists in the field around the world with scientists, and with specific conservation mission and educational outcome each year. During this pilot expedition this past May, we filmed AFC's 3rd documentary film with a focus on sea turtles, stingrays and the invasive lionfish. We have partnered with Dr. Guy Harvey and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, in the Cayman Islands.
We are now assembling a small team of approximately 12-15 artists for a pilot expedition this Spring.
Call to Artists for AFC 2014 Explorers Program - May 17-26, 2014
This is a general call to AFC members with priority/preference given to those with scuba/snorkeling experience and a demonstrated marine art focus, for participation in the first full expedition next May 17-26, 2014. The trip is cooperative in nature and will be designed with a flexible agenda to allow each artist the opportunity to independently pursue a chosen areas of focus, while offering a group experience. As a resident of Grand Cayman and world-renowned artist, marine biologist and conservationist, Dr. Harvey has kindly offered to be an informal expedition "guide" for much of the time.

We've negotiated a special group rate for our trip this year. Assuming double occupancy for accommodation, participants will need to budget $1000 - $2100 US for 9 nights (depending on room type, single vs. double-occupancy and with/without scuba package - 2 boat trips/day x 4 days) plus ~$600 for meals, plus your flight to George Town, Grand Cayman. We are planning an optional side trip to Little Cayman and/or Cayman Brac for an extra $200/day.
Payment policy (for room/scuba package only) is as follows: A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required at the time of commitment and the remaining balance is due 45 days prior to the group's arrival. The penalty for cancellation is $100 per person if between 59-45 days prior to arrival. If cancelled between 44-30 days prior to arrival, the penalty is $200.00 per person. If cancelled 29-15 days prior to arrival the penalty is 50% of package cost. If cancelled 14 days or less, 100% penalty. We will need a commitment as soon as possible to ensure accommodation is available. We have a few rooms on reserve for those ready to commit. Space is very limited so contact us asap to book early.
Program Participation Requirements
This expedition is open to all AFC artist members in good standing. Participating artists will be expected to produce at least 2 to 3 works within 1 year (May 2014) of the trip, relating to trip for an marine art exhibit event in 2015. Artists would be expected to donate at least one original artwork to support marine conservation and the program itself with AFC.
