Lorna Hamilton

AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for November, 2010

It was in 2005 that Irish artist Lorna Hamilton decided to put her interest and passion for wildlife to canvas. Both before and since that time she has been a conservation supporter. She is a regular volunteer at Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre including duties in the grounds and education department.

She has held an exhibition in conjunction with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust to Which goes 25% of sales. There is a conservation message with each painting.

Lorna holds Wildlife drawing workshops for children and adults and contributes through the AFC to various conservation and wildlife trusts.

Lorna assists in the maintenance and monitoring of Area of Special and Scientific Interest, and makes donations of 25% through the sale of prints to the R.S.P.B. and Eagles Flying, a scientifically run Bird of Prey sanctuary. Additionally 25% is  donation from the sale of a painting to the RSPB She holds a chidrens' workshop at Aquarium to promote art and stimulate an interest in wildlife.

Lorna graduated from the University of Ulster in 1995 with BA(Hons) in Fine Art and immediately began her journey as a fulltime professional artist. As with many young artists she realised that she had to find some way of creating a steady income. She found that painting pet portraits and children provided a little security. Although she loved painting portraits she always strived to paint her own pictures which would gain admiration and respect in their own right. However she painted with little focus or direction.

In 2007, Lorna was accepted by the Society of Animals Artists shortly followed by membership in Artists of Conservation. Since then she has exhibited in the SAA and AFC annual shows as well as in the prestigious Bird in Art Exhibition.

Lorna has won various awards including featuring in the winners gallery of Wildscape Magazine's art competition over the past 3 years.
