Patricia Ackor

AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for October, 2008

Patricia's on-going conservation work consists of almost 30 years' membership in The Nature Conservancy, The World Wildflife Fund and The Cousteau Society. In addition, she has been a long-standing supporter of The National Wildlife Federation, National Parks and Conservation Association, The Audubon Society, The Whale Museum, The Environmental Defense Fund, Earthjustice, Natural Resources Defense Council, Tree People (Los Angeles), Defenders of Wildlife, Center for Marine Conservation, and others. "My committment to the enviromnent is matched only by my passion for my artwork."

"Influenced by the oil paintings of Thomas Moran (1837-1926), and the contemporary watercolorist, Nita Engle, Nature will always be my subject: She has created the images; I attempt to interpret them on paper and canvas as well as with fiber." Graduated from Syracuse University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Patricia spent seven years as a professional Interior Designer in the Washington, D.C. area, then opened her own weaving studio. There, for the next four years, she created one-of-a-kind wall hangings, tapestries, window treatments, light fixtures, yardage and other ideas/designs that could be hand-woven for interior design firms and individual clients. In 1976 she moved to Southern California with the intention of continuing her weaving career but became side-tracked by a "temporary" job which lasted 13 years, as well as other pursuits. Finally, in the late 1990s, requiring an outlet for her creative energies,  Patricia came back to her original passion: painting and drawing. Teaching herself watercolor and wildlife portraiture, she added over fifty originals to her existing portfolio of realistic landscapes done in oil. Having now retired from the full-time workforce, Patricia moved to Tucson, Arizona where she fell in love with the desert flora and has begun a series of "portraits" of cactus blossoms.
