New Art/Conservation Facebook Initiative

Artists for Conservation

AFC artist Kitty Harvill set out earlier this year with the goal of inspiring artists to support each other and raising the profile of endangered species. She created a Facebook group that involved an art challenge to her followers, of creating one painting each week featuring wildlife and nature. The public Facebook group, named 52 WEEKS - Nature Painting Challenge, began with just nine members and through the year she has seen the group grow to over 200 participants, experienced and novice, from four continents. Each Monday, Kitty posts an image as inspiration for the week's painting project. The result has been a blossoming of relationships between the artists and the natural world.

The initiative has not only inspired a worldwide collaborative collective among artists but has also reached the scientific community. Contacted by a biologists working with endangered species and habitat protection in Brazil, the White-lipped Peccary became the subject for a Challenge week. Thirty pieces of artwork were produced and a movement was set in motion. Through this model, Kitty has developed an online interactive community building awareness about endangered species who's art is now being utilized by biologists and conservationists who provide images and in turn use the groups artwork to help create a connection with the public in presentations around the world.
