Jeffrey Whiting The Focus of Special Museum Exhibit

Jeffrey Whiting, the founder and operator of the World Wide Nature Artists Group, was honoured in a special exhibit at the Eastern Ontario Biodiversity Museum in Kemptville, Ontario just outside Ottawa. The focus is the artwork created especially for Whiting's book "Owls of North America" which provides detailed paintings of all nineteen species of owls found in North America. The large format, hardcover book, published in 1997 by The Heliconia Press Inc., is an acclaimed reference book for birders, artists and anyone interested in Owls. The book took nearly two years of concerted effort to complete.

The impressive artwork depicting each owl in four different views is done life-sized and in acrylic paints in order to show all the detailed feather markings of the owls . Some of the paintings are over 2 feet by 6 feet (the Snowy and the Great Grey) while the little Saw-whet owl is painted in a more modest 1 foot by 2 feet size. A total of over forty paintings are on display at the museum for the next four months.

Supplementing the exhibit are samples of Whiting's sculptures of owls as well as a photo essay of the artist at work. The display will remain until at least September 2001.

The Eastern Ontario Biodiversity Museum is a centre for research and a repository for natural history collections with a strong emphasis on gathering and sharing information with the public. It has also become a leader in biodiversity education in Eastern Ontario, through school and public programmes, field outings, and publications.
