Artists for Conservation Flag Expedition 11

11/21 - Today, after months of planning and preparation, including a new AFC website and blog (set up just in time for the trip), we're down to the final hours before flying to Africa. I will be joining Stephen Quinn on his Artists for Conservation Flag Expedition to Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo to study the endangered Mountain Gorilla and retrace the steps of the famous explorer/artist, Carl Akeley. Joining us as well for much of the expedition is videographer/director, Will Richardson. Will and I arrived in NJ yesterday and are building on each others' excitement!

The enormity of our undertaking is only now beginning to set in.

As I write this, the three of us are making final prepara- tions at Steve's home in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Steve's wife, Linda has made a wonderful pre-Thanksgiving send-off meal. Still many last minute items to cross of the list, but we're off to a great start, so this first entry for the expedition will be brief. I'll aim to add more thoughts on our connection in Amsterdam, or Nairobi, en route to Kigali.

We are all looking forward to telling an important story - how heroes in the field today, such as Dr. Mike Cranfield of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinarian Project,  are doing critical and innovative work to ensure the survival of mountain gorillas. We intend to frame this modern-day cause, by telling the story of Africa's first national park, and how roughly a century ago, an artist/explorer - Carl Akeley - played a key role in its creation, as well as ensuring the survival of these incredible creatures until now. - Jeff
