AFC artist and Board of Director, Brent Cooke was recently presented the 2015 Robert Bateman Award from the Canadian Wildlife Federation, headquartered in Ottawa, Canada.

A marine biologist and a skilled underwater photographer, Brent has made valuable contributions to science including mapping the ranges of various marine species and collecting more than 14,000 underwater photographs for the Royal British Columbia Museum, including images of species not previously known to live in B.C. waters. He made the transition to sculpture in 1999, when he began casting bronze sculptures of birds and marine wildlife, basing his work on his field photography. Since then, he has used his art to promote wildlife conservation and natural history to the public at large. In addition, Brent also served for 18 years as Director of Exhibits at the Royal British Columbia Museum - western Canada's largest museum.

Brent is the third recipient of this recently added award given to a Canadian artist who has contributed to conservation through artistic expression. Last year this prestigious award went to Paul Nicklin, a noted National Geographic photographer. CWF hosted the winners of all eight annual awards at their AGM and Awards Dinner held June 27th , 2015 in St. John NB, where Brent gave a brief but detailed talk on the work of AFC while accepting this honour.

Robert Bateman, whose name the award honors, is also a member of Artists for Conservation and Honorary Chair of AFC's Advisory Board. Bateman also received AFC's highest honor in 2009 - the Simon Combes Conservation Artist Award - and served as Patron of the AFC Festival from 2011-2013.

AFC congratulates Brent on this award and his life long commitment to conservation and artistic excellence.
